Ryan's Geranium

Ryan is home - YAY! And he's been a help to me today - turning soil and making a mulch run to OSH. He returned with the 10 bags of mulch and placed them out where I directed. Thank you Ry.

Before he unloaded the mulch, he revealed that he bought himself a plant. He said he told the nursery person, "I want something that will grow obnoxiously huge."
This is what they came up with - a geranium! Well, really it is a pelargonium but whatever...I call them geraniums.

Ryan hopes it takes over the yard while he's on his mission.

On another gardening note - just in case you were wondering what's been going on with the potting bench - this is what it is being used for right now - sprouting seeds

Happy Day!

Blankies

I just read a post by one of my nieces-in-law about their conference weekend, it included the traumatic washing of a beloved blankie. I just loved it - not the trauma but the memories evoked of our own blankie separation troubles. I started to write a long comment and then the computer timed out! While bootin' up again, I decided I'd do my own post on blankies - and this is what I have to say (pictures to follow).

I looked, with no luck, for a Linus and Lucy cartoon where Lucy is giving the play by play count down from washer to dryer of Linus' blanket getting washed - in the meantime Linus looks like he's going to self destruct. Then the blanket is returned to his hands - ahhhhh, all better.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all had something that just to hold it or touch it made everything all better? Maybe we do - what simple things make everything all better for you?

I had a blankie when I was a kid - it was called "feety warmer" - the perfect name for a blanket that was lovingly wrapped around my feet at night when being tucked into bed. I don't know what happened to feety warmer.

We had three blankie kids in our house. Eric, Ryan and Claire. I tried to avoid the blanket attachment by rotating blankets for Eric, but realized the effort was for not when I found Eric under the crib one day (where I stored the blankets) digging through the pile for the special blanket of his choice. It turned to tatters, almost disintegrated over time. Ryan, wouldn't you know, picked a family heirloom for his blankie (I'm serious) - it too disintegrated over time. I know, you're all wondering why we'd give him an heirloom as a blanket. I don't know! At the time, it made sense to me that he have his father's blanket that a great grandmother had made and it had been preserved all that time. Eric had the same chance at the same blanket. He just didn't choose that one. We can honestly say the heirloom was loved beyond measure. Claire had a much sturdier blanket. Hers exists today. Granted one particular edge of the blanket is totally messed up, but it is still very much a blanket - she still had it in 5th grade. I do not know where the blanket is now, possibly stowed under the covers at the end of her bed...? Noooo. I really think it has been tucked away somewhere in a box. I don't recall what went first, the blanket or the thumb. She is so organized, she weaned herself based on a schedule and rules she made up for herself. I'll have to ask her where the blanket is.

I asked - she doesn't know???

One of our - *my* - favorite books of all time - OWEN by Kevin Henkes - the story of a little mouse boy who will soon be going to school but what about the blanket he loves?

Pictures
Eric - finding the perfect comforter And wouldn't you know, the one he's leaning on is the heirloom! But he ultimately ended up with one of those woven ones with a wide satiny ribbon on the edge.

Look at that finger action going there - rubbing that ribbon

A few years later - tatters - can you guess what's going on here?

Ryan wrapped up in his blankie - we all thought wearing blankets on the head was all about protection from sand and heat etc, now we know, it's really just a practical way to carry around your blankie.

Claire came to the world in need of lots of security with three older brothers around. It came in the form of silky blankets from grandmas. She slept on and under silky blankets. Concerned she'd still need a silky blanket when she was grown, grandma Judy had a queen size blanket made for her. But here are some pictures of the ones she started on and the one in particular that became her best friend and comfort - the one without lace.

And Evan - he was not a blanket boy - he found security and comfort in other things...

I so wish I had a picture of him with his dust mask on his head but can't find one anywhere but I think goggles were there giving him his special powers or whatever it was they did for him for just as long as he wore dust masks.

And with all that - look how they've turned out -

Ooooh - I love my kids!

A Dream Come True

The Jeep is running! All that Greg wants done isn't completed yet but it moves without having to be pushed. The "maiden" voyage - to his office in Los Gatos - about a 10 mile round trip.

Later in the day we took a family drive - to a neighborhood restaurant, about 2 miles away - Greg talked away about the old days and said "this is a dream come true"

Tried to get Claire with her hair blowing in the wind

Evan commenting that "it smells bad" - we think the exhaust is getting in but we've been assured that will be fixed if we attach the top better - so what if we have the top off?

We arrived safely

Points to whoever can identify these "knobs" and such and what they are/were used for

Mother's Day Comes Early

I went to the temple Saturday morning on a Stake Relief Society trip and came home in the early afternoon to this site...It's a potting bench! I told Greg on Friday that I wanted a Potting Bench for Mother's Day and that I needed it sooner than later, that I'd get it for myself and he said "Let me and the kids get it..." And they did! And they put it together in our family room because it started raining.

Isn't it wonderful?! I love it.

And - really - none too soon - it is Spring in San Jose.

Actually, these daffodils have already faded - I took these pictures when we got back from DC a month ago. But we had a cool February and early March - so they lasted a good long time - very nice for us here.

But there is plenty of yellow to be seen elsewhere - it really is a sign of Spring in our yard (all the weeds too - time to get cracking weeding and planting...I have seeds ready to go...)

Yay Spring!

More on Spring

These pictures were taken pretty much from the same spot - but look at the change!
That's a difference of a month - the daffodils are faded but the day lilies are coming back! not that I didn't expect them to come back but I just get so excited every time they do - same with the bulbs - anything that grows for that matter. I know - I'm weird...

Pacific Orchid Exposition

Nancy and I went to the Pacific Orchid Exposition in San Francisco on Fri. 3/6
San Francisco was beautiful! And so were all of the orchids.

Yah, I know it is hard to see - it's Alcatraz

Marina Green with the top of the Palace of Fine Arts in the distance - looks almost like a copper dome

Idea how some plants are displayed

Some of these orchids are huge - I wish I'd thought to hold my hand up next to them or something - this one is probably 7-8+ inches across

These ones maybe 8 inches or more across (huge) amazing

This one is about 3+ inches across

Nancy and I think these ones look like the muppet Gonzo

This orchid is best in show - just attached to the display pole - just hanging there...

Those are the roots - growing our of a "blob" of moss and such - amazing

No wonder people believe in fairies

More fairies coming our way
